My first aggregation for my Fall 2020 reporting class. This is a compilation of five different important stories that occurred within 24 hours. Sources vary as well as the topics, but all center on the COVID-19 epidemic.
Aspen Snowmass, comprised of Morgan McBride, Stephanie Massey, Anna Palacios, and KC Krueger, clenched the 2020 U.S. Open Women's Handicap on Saturday at Houston Polo Club. Villa Ecleta proved to be a tough oponent, however, Aspen Snowmass's spectacular dedication to defense ultimately paid off.
Polo was brought to the United States in 1856. Since then, women have been fighting for equality within the sport. Women were finally allowed to be members of the United States Polo Association in 1970. Before then, some women donned fake mustaches and cut their hair to play. Today, intercollegiate players are battling to level the playing field.
Partners in Food Solutions is a nonprofit organization that works to end hunger in Africa by building infrastructure in Africa. By partnering with high profile companies such as General Mills, PFS successfully secures large donations from niche audiences by employing communication strategies and theories.
The Freedom of Information Act is a federal law that requires the disclosure of information from a government body. The information can be disclosed in full or partially. The Texas Public Information Act is a specific FOI act within the state of Texas that guarantees access to public records. Back in October, over a month ago, I submitted a request letter to Arlington Heights Highschool. In my request, I stated that I would need to receive documentation outlining the plans Arlington had in place for ensuring students could return to the classroom safely with COVID-19 protocols as well as how many students the high school could safely host. Although schools are not government entities through the sense of what people typically think are government bodies, schools are extensions of the government. Public schools receive government funding, teachers, and policies. Therefore, public schools like Arlington Heights High are included in the Freedom of Information Act as well as the Texas Public Information Act. After many pestering emails and phone calls on my behalf, I have yet to receive information from the school.
Vaughn Miller Jr. is a professional polo player from Dallas. On off seasons, he spends time at his family polo club, Prestonwood Polo Club which is just 45 minutes north of Dallas. In 2016, he won the national highschool tournament alongside his younger brother. He is also lauded with creating the University of North Texas's polo team, which is currently ranked second in the nation. Miller just finished playing the 10-goal season in Houston on the infamous team Tonkawa. As the winter season approaches, Miller has committed to playing in Indio, California with Lockton Polo. He is also looking forward to job offer with his Tonkawa teammate, Mason Wroe, in Sarasota, Florida for the spring high goal season.
